What is online therapy?
Often referred to as e-therapy, telehealth, video counselling, or e-counselling, online therapy involves a therapist providing psychotherapeutic support over the internet.
This assistance can be given in various ways, including via email, video conferencing, online chat or instant messaging.
Online therapy can be delivered in real-time (i.e. phone conversations) or in a time-delayed fashion (i.e. emails).
As an evolution of both counselling and psychotherapy, online therapy is an important tool for both professionals and clients with a wide range of benefits to both.

Helps with: Anxiety, bereavement, grief, loss, bullying, mental health, relationships, trauma, stress.
Counselling falls under the umbrella term of ‘talking therapies’.
Counselling gives people the opportunity to talk openly about their challenges and feelings, while being heard and understood. Counselling tends to be short-term and I tend to use solution-focused, existential and person-centred short-term methods. Counselling aims to help you live a more productive life in your own way.

Psychotherapy is a collection of therapies designed to help you with the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are affecting you. I am trained in integrative, existential and humanistic psychotherapies. This means I work with you wherever your headspace is.
Psychotherapy is more long-term work and gives you the necessary skills to cope with challenges in a healthy and empowering way.

What is the best way to set up an online therapy practice?
While setting up your own practice may seem daunting, it can also be very rewarding. Here are some simple tips to help make the process run smoothly.
#1 Don’t underestimate referrals
Rather than spending thousands on a lavish advertising campaign, consult your professional network. Your fellow therapists may be a rich source of referrals to help grow your client base.
And, as you establish a good reputation, those clients will spread positive word-of-mouth.
#2 Personalise your space
Maintaining a professional space is important even if it won’t be used to welcome clients. The environment you create will have an impact on your ability to deliver a professional service and will still have an effect on whether your clients feel comfortable.
#3 Believe in your worth
When setting consultation fees, you may feel tempted to offer sliding scales (discounts) or even pro bono (free) sessions. However, it’s important to keep in mind how much time, effort and expertise went into your training.
By charging what you are worth, your clients will truly value your service and trust your experience.
#4 Help clients do the work
As a therapist, it’s your job to create an alliance with your clients. Help them figure out the root of their problems and what they want to change in their lives. Then, help them create a framework to change their thinking and behaviour.
Ensure you factor in the less traditional dynamic where face-to-face is not used to ensure the work you set is both achievable and can be tracked.
How to build an online therapy practice
– Join an online therapy platform
An easy way to jumpstart your online therapy career is joining a virtual clinic, or online therapy platform.
These “mega-clinics” offer you a fantastic virtual environment for e-therapy, along with supreme practice management and security features which can be too expensive to implement on your own.
By using their templates, you can set up your practice and start seeing clients very quickly.
– Launch your own website
If you prefer individuality, and are willing to bear the cost, you can elect to hire a web designer to build you a professional website. This way, you do not have to share clients, and have total control over the look and feel of your web presence.
– Start an email campaign
If you currently offer traditional talk therapy, let your regular clients know that you’re expanding into online therapy. The most effective way to do this is by crafting an effective email campaign.
These emails should explain why online therapy is beneficial for them, and what you will offer them.
– Join my Online Therapy Facebook group

How to start an online therapy business
✔ Research your state’s licencing laws
Before launching your practice, determine whether your state requires you to be certified and trained in online counselling.
✔ Find the ideal telehealth solution
As technology advances, there are many ways to conduct online counselling. To ensure you and your clients feel at ease, you need to find the right technological solutions for you.
This means deciding whether an instant (i.e. Skype, phone calls, etc.) or delayed response (i.e. email, online chat, etc.) or a combination of the two is most suitable. Above all, choose the technology that you and your clients will be most comfortable with.
✔ Set up your insurance
Online therapy is still relatively new territory. So, when setting up your practice’s insurance, you need to check the current Australian guidelines for virtual therapy. Check whether the insurance broker you’ve partnered with will reimburse for online therapy services.
Also, ensure your insurance company reimburses at the same rate as traditional, in-office therapy sessions.
✔ Set up a website
Although the initial cost may seem excessive, setting up a website for your online therapy practice is absolutely essential. Think of your website as your “online address”. It helps potential clients to find you easily, and choose you over competitors.
Your website also gives you the opportunity to “sell” your counselling services. In other words, through your website, you can present the best image of your practice and what you can offer your clients.
Remember, your website should tell potential clients what you do and how you do it, which services you offer, explain your therapeutic training and background, who you are and your values and beliefs.
This personal touch will help clients connect with you and encourage them to work with you.
