‘Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it’, as Winston Churchill said. This quote is also based on an older quote from George Santayana. Women over centuries have been targeted for being different, for holding different values, or for speaking their minds. Are women ‘a bitch’ for speaking their truth?
As an example; witches were burned at the stake, in the US, England and elsewhere. Women victims of domestic violence are often mocked and made fun of in our court system, across the Western World. Women have had their sanity questioned from the #metoo movement as well.
Women across the Western World – and in spiritual circles, particularly – are standing up to be counted. We are saying ‘enough is enough’. The matriarchy must be able to thrive, not just merely the patriarchy.
Women have been treated appallingly for centuries. It is not merely enough to grant women the right to vote, equality of pay, women need acknowledgement. Acknowledgement of what they have been through.
It’s not about who’s right and who’s wrong – or who has the last word on social media. We need to have more heart, not less, in all that we do.
Science is starting to catch up with what women have known for centuries. Epigenetics is now starting to admit – we carry trauma in our genes. As mentioned, women have come forward, saying #metoo across the world – and yet some of these women, the men who have perpetrated the crimes have been exonerated. When are we going to position women at the forefront of the community, the family and the nurturing that we do so readily, without question?
There needs to be a place in the world for all people to thrive. In the Eastern tradition, this is called yin-yang. Life is about balance. Empathy is the antidote to shame and exposure to trauma (Brown, 2012).
Brene Brown, who has shared her stories, wisdom and research into our connections with each other, has uncovered some important steps towards more positive leadership. Her ‘Dare to Lead’ program encourages a collaborative, humble leadership style, while working at all times with inclusion. We need more of this, not less, in our struggle with our new age. People like Jacinda Arden, the New Zealand Prime Minister, are leading the charge for new levels of leadership and empathy, despite her being a politician. Amazing – it is possible to be a politician and have empathy for others.
So, why does all this matter? Women have had their truths and experience questioned. Now, more than ever, we can speak to others and find others in the space that is the collective consciousness – social media! Why not find your group, your community, or your tribe there? You too can help create better connections. In all we do, it’s important to consider the other person and the golden spiritual rule – across all spiritual traditions – to display acts of reciprocity and doing unto others as you would like things done unto yourself.
